QUEST WORLD!

QUEST WORLD IS NOW ACTIVE!

Quest world is a new map that will be our opportunity, as a server, to play the survival version of minecraft as a group. There are some principles for this world:

  • Don't bring in items/tools from other worlds.
  • No admin powers, and no commands. I am working to disable this technically, but until then, honor system.
  • Once we reach the end portal and fight the ender dragon, the world will be reset with a new map.
  • Ideally everyone should work together...but the more I think about it, the less offended I get at the idea of a rogue team making it a race, getting there first, and causing a world reset :D

There's some logistical issues...Portals to the nether may not work, and even in that case, there's still only 1 nether, so getting blaze rods is a little broken. Try to go to the nether honestly if you can...I don't wanna make a separate nether for this. But that's the deal...ENJOY!

Some Things for the Week

Sup homies! Now that we're all back from vacations and whatnot, time for getting down to some updates.

Yea, the temporary server is working ok for most people (sorry cncr) but it's not nearly a long term solution. For example...it's running on the system I keep backup PDF's of all my financial documents and such...so I can't give other owners access to it to do things, like, say, fix it when it breaks. Also, my residential internet sucks. We're looking into hosts...we found one I kinda like, I just asked them some ?s and hopefully they'll get back to me soon.

We figgered out the shiz with the .com domain name...should have it back within 5-6 days. The current message about that is at the bottom of the link...it's very boring and the links are removed, but it's proof it's in progress :)

Finally, this week we're gonna enable the 1.0 map for the 1.0 survival challenge. It's a new world where like we talked about, no bringing in resources from other worlds and we play to get to the ender dragon as a team. I want to make it after we move hosts to a permanent deal, but realistically, we just need to do it. My plan is to enable that map Friday evening, so anyone that wants in gets in this weekend to play. I actually think we keep resetting this world each time we beat the dragon, then leave update map as 1.0 map since some people (::cough cough:: kermit) built permanently in update world.

A Message from the Cobble House Cookery

So, I've started a little town in the new update world and I've been making a lot of progress. So far I've managed to make a few buildings including a green house, a tower, a safe house, and, what I like to call, a cobble house. After a simultaneous copyright law suit and company buy out, though, the family owned business Enderman Industries now owns the cobble house and, as I discovered, they have already hired their first employee. As part of the payment for "damages to the Cobble House© reputation", I am legally obligated to post this message from their "newest branch".

Test Server at Surf’s House

I'm kind of surprised...the test server is working out better than I thought. I'm gonna put the real map up there some time today. If you see the map changed, don't blow it up :) I took the most recent backup from this morning of the servercraft version...also all our homes and such should be restored when I get to it.

Temporary Address: surfrock66.yourhda.com

Until then, I need to see how functional this really is. Please fill out this survey over the next few days...submit multiple times if you would. More data = better assessment if this is a long term solution.

By The Way: Wanna see what we have to host the server? Here's a backup of our configuration to play with: Server.Config.Backup.zip

WTF is Going On?

UPDATE and REQUEST: Testing the config to move hosts. Can people connect to surfrock66.yourhda.com to see if it's working? Assume this is not the map we'll keep, it's just a test setup. Expect mega lag...this is coming from my house :o

Also, it appears everyone is a noob when they join, this is temporarily by design. I need to figure out how I can add users and change their groups in a way more efficient than McMyAdmin. I'm collecting data.

FINAL UPDATE: People signing in momentarily gave me what I need. I think the config is all set. Can people PLEASE connect to surfrock66.yourhda.com to see if it's playable (I know it's lag...it's my residential internet) and if there's any bugs. If not...VPS here we come.

OK REALLY LAST UPDATE: Is playing on this really so bad? It's running out of my house...play on the test server for a day or 2 and at different times. I wanna see how running the server out of my house plays...I assume it'll suck, but it seems good so far. If it's playable for 24 hours...I'd much rather host it here for FREE than pay anyone else to host it :)

Short answer? I don't know! We keep crashing the server...it's random plugins. Each time I disable the offender plugin...it crashes again with a different one. Problem is, these are really severe crashes...the whole virtual machine needs a reboot, which I have to submit a ticket for and wait for the host. Hence all the downtime.

McMyadmin just updated as well...it's possible that's the offender itself. Most people use a permissions plugin that reads a config file, then distributes groups and permissions...McMyAdmin has it's own permissions and groups thing...which then EXPORTS the config file to the plugin for other plugins to read. I think THAT is the broken process. The last plugin I disabled is the new permission manager, PermissionsBukkit. There's actually an old one we used to use (Permissions) but it's been discontinued, but it still kind of worked. Everyone says "move to PermissionsBukkit!" so we did...but now we constantly crash.

Conclusion...I'm working on it. A lot of this is waiting for the host. If this goes on for much longer...we'll move to someone NOT using mcmyadmin, which IMHO over complicates things. SORRY!
